Girls Varsity Basketball · Lady Wolves Basketball Ready for Sectional Tournament

Written by Cesar Mares, PCR Senior

Bouncing back from back-to-back losing seasons is no easy feat. Evident throughout sports history, underperforming teams usually undergo multiple seasons of rebuilding with the goal of creating a championship caliber team by adjusting rosters and coaching staff. This was not the case for the 2017-2018 Providence Cristo Rey Girls Varsity Basketball team.

Following a disastrous season of 2 wins and 16 losses, the Lady Wolves were able to pick themselves up by recording 9 wins and 13 losses this year. Much of their unprecedented success can be attributed to the new coaching staff and more consistent performances by some of Providence’s key players. While both reasons are viable, the real reason behind their success is that this year’s team is simply playing together. A new mindset and a new attitude has been the driving force behind this year’s successful season, and the Lady Wolves hope to maintain their winning ways in Wednesday’s sectional game against Christel House Watanabe.

The Lady Wolves faced Christel House Watanabe for the first game of this season and outscored them 35-11. While Providence did win this game with what we could call a lopsided victory, it is critical for the Lady Wolves to maintain focus. Teams can develop over time and end at a very different place than where they started at the beginning of the year. It is best to enter a game with a mindset of giving your all, rather than enter a game with a mindset of pride and indifference.

Christel House will serve as a formidable opponent for Providence, and if the Lady Wolves win their first game, they will advance to face either Greenwood Christian or Central Christian. Providence Cristo Rey was placed in a sectional that is loaded with talent and skill, but if the Lady Wolves can continue their unselfish style of play, believe in themselves, and hit their shots, there is no limit to what this team can do.

The Lady Wolves will face Christel House Watanabe tonight at 7:30 at Greenwood Christian Academy. Let’s go and cheer on our fellow Wolves!
